Air Fryer vs OTG vs Convection Oven: Which Should an Indian Kitchen Buy?

An air fryer, an OTG and a convection oven all cook with hot air, which is why the comparison confuses so many buyers. The difference is how fast that air moves and how much space it moves around — and that single distinction decides which one is right for your kitchen.

The one-line difference

An air fryer is a small convection oven with a very powerful fan. That is genuinely the whole story. The compact chamber and fast-moving air strip moisture off the surface of food quickly, which is what produces a crisp crust with barely any oil. An OTG heats with exposed rods and little or no fan, so it cooks more gently and evenly — better for baking, worse for crisping.

Air fryer — what it is genuinely best at

Everything you would otherwise deep fry. Samosas, cutlets, tikka, nuggets, fries, papad, roasted makhana, tandoori-style chicken. It reheats leftover fried food better than any other appliance in the house — a microwave makes a samosa soggy, an air fryer makes it crisp again.

Its limits are honest ones: the basket is small, and food has to sit in roughly a single layer to crisp properly, so a 4.5 litre air fryer feeds two to four rather than a party. Tall cakes and bread are awkward. And it is loud-ish, because that fan is doing the work.

If that matches how you cook, the 4.5L digital air fryer is the right size for most households of two to four.

OTG — what it is genuinely best at

Baking. Cakes, cookies, breads, pizza on a stone, anything that needs steady, gentle, all-round heat over a longer time. OTGs are also usually cheaper per litre of capacity, and they grill well.

Its limits: long preheat, bulky on the counter, and it simply does not crisp like an air fryer — without strong air movement, food browns but stays softer. Cleaning around exposed rods is a chore.

Convection ovens and air fryer ovens

An air fryer oven is the middle path: a convection oven with an air-fryer-grade fan and a chamber big enough for racks and a rotisserie. You get most of the air fryer's crisping and most of the OTG's capacity and baking ability in one appliance.

That is the trade most Indian kitchens actually want, because counter space is the real constraint — one appliance that air fries, bakes, grills, roasts and does rotisserie beats two appliances that each do half the job. The SOLARA 12L Air Fryer Oven is built for exactly this: 12 presets, six accessories including a rotisserie rod, and enough room to cook for a family in one go.

Worth knowing: a “convection microwave” is a different thing again — a microwave with a convection element bolted on. It reheats fastest of all, but it crisps least well of the three. We compare that separately in air fryer vs microwave oven.

So which should you buy?

  • You mostly want crisp snacks and healthier fried food. Buy an air fryer. Nothing else does it as well or as fast.
  • You bake seriously — cakes, breads, cookies. Buy an OTG. An air fryer will frustrate you.
  • You want to do both, and have room for one appliance. Buy an air fryer oven. This is the majority case.
  • You cook for 5+ regularly. Skip the small basket air fryer — you will be cooking in three batches. Go 10L+.

Want both jobs in one appliance? The SOLARA 12L Air Fryer Oven air fries, bakes, grills, roasts, dehydrates and does rotisserie — with six accessories included.

Frequently asked questions

Is an air fryer better than an OTG?

For crisping and speed, yes, clearly. For baking cakes and bread, no — an OTG is better. They are not really substitutes; they are different tools that happen to share a heat source.

Can an air fryer replace an oven?

A basket air fryer cannot — it is too small and the fan is too aggressive for delicate bakes. An air fryer oven largely can, which is why the combined format has become the popular choice.

Can I bake a cake in an air fryer?

In a small tin, yes, and it works reasonably. But the strong airflow can dry the top and lopside the rise, and capacity limits you to one small cake. For regular baking, use an OTG or an air fryer oven.

Which uses less electricity, an air fryer or an OTG?

An air fryer, in practice — not because it draws less power but because it preheats in two minutes instead of twelve and cooks faster. Working numbers are in air fryer electricity consumption in India.

What size air fryer do I need?

Roughly: 3–4 litres for 1–2 people, 4.5–6 litres for 2–4, and 10 litres or more for 5+ or when you want racks and rotisserie. Remember food needs to sit in a single layer to crisp.

Is an air fryer worth buying in India?

If your household eats fried snacks regularly, it usually pays for itself in oil and in how much less often you deep fry. If you rarely fry and mainly bake, an OTG is the better buy.
