Air Fryer Electricity Consumption in India: What It Really Costs to Run

“Will it spike my electricity bill?” is one of the most common questions before buying an air fryer in India — and one of the least well answered. Here is the actual arithmetic, with the assumptions stated so you can redo it for your own tariff.

The calculation

Electricity is billed in units, and one unit is one kilowatt-hour (kWh) — running a 1,000 watt appliance for one hour.

Units used = (watts ÷ 1000) × hours

A typical basket air fryer draws 1,200–1,500 W. A larger air fryer oven draws roughly 1,500–1,800 W. Check the rating plate on your own unit rather than assuming.

Worked example: a 1,400 W air fryer run for 20 minutes uses (1400 ÷ 1000) × 0.33 = about 0.47 units.

Cost per use and per month

Domestic tariffs across Indian states broadly run ₹5 to ₹10 per unit depending on your state and consumption slab. The table below uses ₹8 as a middle figure.

Appliance Power Typical session Units Cost @ ₹8/unit
Basket air fryer 1,400 W 20 min ~0.47 ~₹3.70
Air fryer oven 1,700 W 30 min ~0.85 ~₹6.80
OTG 1,500 W 12 min preheat + 25 min ~0.93 ~₹7.40
Microwave (reheat) 1,200 W 5 min ~0.10 ~₹0.80

What that means monthly

  • Used 20 minutes a day, every day: about 14 units a month — roughly ₹110 at ₹8/unit.
  • Used 3–4 times a week (more typical): about 6–7 units — roughly ₹50 a month.

For context, that is comparable to running a ceiling fan for a few hours a day, and a fraction of what a refrigerator or air conditioner adds.

Why your real figure will be lower

This is the part most calculators get wrong. An air fryer does not draw full power for the whole cooking time. It pulls maximum wattage while heating up, then the thermostat cycles the element on and off to hold temperature — the fan keeps running, but the fan is a small load.

In practice an air fryer often averages somewhere around 60–75% of its rated draw across a session. So treat the numbers above as a comfortable upper bound rather than an exact bill.

How it compares

Against an OTG: the air fryer usually wins, not because it draws less power but because it skips a 10–15 minute preheat and cooks faster. Less time at load means fewer units.

Against a microwave: the microwave wins on pure reheating — it is far quicker and heats the food rather than the air. But it will not crisp anything, which is why the two are not really substitutes. See air fryer vs microwave oven.

Against gas: a subsidised LPG cylinder is generally cheaper per unit of heat than grid electricity in India. The air fryer's argument is not that it costs less to run than deep frying on gas — it is the oil you stop buying, and the cooking you stop doing in a litre of it.

The overlooked saving: a litre of cooking oil costs ₹150–200. Deep frying consumes it far faster than air frying, and reused frying oil is the part most households would rather cut out anyway.

Five ways to cut the running cost

  1. Skip the preheat for most foods. Air fryers reach temperature in two to three minutes; frozen snacks and vegetables do fine started from cold.
  2. Cook full batches in a single layer. Two half-empty runs cost roughly twice one full one.
  3. Do not open the basket repeatedly. Every check dumps hot air. This is exactly what a see-through window is for.
  4. Use residual heat. Run back-to-back batches while the chamber is already hot.
  5. Match the appliance to the batch. Heating a 12L oven for four samosas wastes energy; heating a small basket three times for a family also wastes it. Size it for how you actually cook.

Sizing it right is the real saving. The 4.5L air fryer suits 2–4 people; the 12L air fryer oven cooks for a family in one go and replaces a separate oven.

Frequently asked questions

How much electricity does an air fryer use per hour?

A 1,400 W air fryer uses about 1.4 units per hour at full draw — roughly ₹11 at ₹8 per unit. Real sessions are 15–30 minutes, and thermostat cycling brings the average below the rated figure.

Does an air fryer increase the electricity bill much?

Not meaningfully for most households. Daily use of around 20 minutes adds roughly ₹100–150 a month at typical tariffs, and it usually replaces some gas cooking.

Which uses more electricity, an air fryer or an OTG?

An OTG, in normal use. The wattages are similar, but the OTG's long preheat and slower cooking mean more minutes at load.

Is an air fryer cheaper to run than an oven?

Yes, for small and medium portions — it heats a much smaller chamber, and heats it faster. For a large roast, a full-size oven is more efficient per kilogram of food.

Do air fryers need a stabiliser?

Generally no. They are resistive heating appliances rated for normal domestic supply. If your area has severe voltage fluctuation, the same precautions you take for other high-wattage appliances apply.

How do I calculate it for my own tariff?

Take the wattage from the rating plate, divide by 1,000, multiply by hours used, then multiply by your per-unit rate from your bill. A 1,500 W unit for half an hour at ₹7 = 1.5 × 0.5 × 7 = about ₹5.25.
