Digital Air Fryer — Sizing It and Using It Well
An air fryer is a small convection oven with a very powerful fan. The fast-moving hot air strips moisture off the surface of food, which is what produces a crisp crust using a spray of oil instead of a panful. For samosas, cutlets, tikka, fries, nuggets and papad, nothing else in the kitchen does the same job as quickly.
What size air fryer do you need?
The number on the box is the basket volume, not how much food will actually crisp in it — food needs to sit in roughly a single layer.

If you regularly cook for five or more, a basket will have you working in batches. Size up rather than down.
Why a see-through window matters more than it sounds
Every time you pull the basket out to check, hot air escapes and the temperature drops — which is exactly what stops food crisping. Being able to watch the browning without opening it means fewer interruptions and more consistent results.
Five things that fix most air fryer complaints
- Do not overcrowd. Single layer, gaps between pieces. This causes more disappointment than anything else.
- Give lean food a light oil coat. Chicken breast, paneer and fish dry out without it.
- Shake or turn halfway. Thirty seconds of effort, noticeably more even browning.
- Skip the preheat for frozen food. It reaches temperature in two to three minutes anyway.
- Cook to golden, not dark brown. Better texture, and it keeps acrylamide lower — see the health guide.
Cleaning and care
Let it cool, then wash the basket and drawer in warm soapy water. Never use metal tongs or scouring pads on the non-stick surface. Paper liners and silicone baskets cut cleaning to a wipe and protect the coating.
Common questions
Does it use a lot of electricity? Less than most expect — roughly ₹3–4 per 20-minute session at typical tariffs. Working numbers in air fryer electricity consumption in India.
Can I bake a cake in it? A small one, yes. For regular baking use an air fryer oven or an OTG — see air fryer vs OTG.
Can I make rotis or chapatis in it? Not well — a tawa is the right tool. An air fryer will crisp an already-cooked chapati into a papad-like base, which is a different thing.
